How hypnotherapy helped Jon manage his nocturnal enuresis

Jon, was 13 years old when he was referred by his mother for a hypnotherapy assessment to manage nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting).

He attended the assessment accompanied by his grandma with whom he was staying as his relationship with his mother was breaking down.

Jon had been wetting the bed for as long as he could remember but there had been times during his life when he didn't have to worry about it e.g., during the summer months when he was away from school. At these times when he didn't have enuresis, he was happy and he was enjoying life.

Jon had recently dropped out of boarding school as he felt he didn't fit in, was being bullied by the older students and knowledge of his enuresis had been spread around the school. His mother managed to get him into a local state school.

Jon was much brighter, however, than his new peers and was getting bored easily in class. His behaviour was starting to become disruptive in lessons and he had been excluded already from school for odd days. He was spending his evenings and weekends hanging around at the local skating rink as he was passionate about ice skating and said he was really good at it. His peers out of school, however, appeared to be much older and he was starting to become involved with the police.

His behaviour at home had become worse too. He had lost respect for his mother and the relationship was breaking down. Jon said he was unable to listen to her anymore and would simply storm out taking himself off somewhere without telling her where he was going. He had become verbally and physically aggressive towards his mother and she had to call the police on occasions because he had smashed windows and doors at home.

Grandma was very supportive and seemed to have a good open relationship with Jon.  She was calm and respected what he had to say, but would correct him if she didn't agree with him, which Jon accepted quite readily. She was very worried about her daughter Sue, Jon's mum, however, as she seemed to be suffering a great deal of stress through Jon's behaviour but also had a lot on her plate with work and university study as a single parent.

Jon was finding it very difficult and didn't know how to deal with his situation. He knew his behaviour wasn't acceptable but he didn't know how to change it and was still experiencing trauma from being bullied and shamed at boarding school and having to fit in again in a new school he wasn't enjoying. Given the turbulent relationship with his mother, it seemed the only genuine support he had was from his Grandma.

Building a trusting relationship by listening and empathising helped Jon to open up and share his feelings and problems. He was very happy to experience hypnotherapy and it meant he could resolve things without having to talk too much about them. Talking to Jon only made things more stressful initially, however, he learned some effective methods to relax and de-stress at the first signs of stress which helped him to articulate his problems better and start to put things in perspective and see the wood for the trees.

The first session involved his Grandma gathering a detailed case history of the problem, however, he was happy to attend by himself for future sessions. There were issues beyond the therapy space that Grandma needed to help him with e.g., to find ways to explain his situation to the school and help him find more stimulation in and out of lessons to prevent boredom creeping in.

In the meantime, Jon stayed with Grandma and spent 3 nights a week doing the thing he was passionate about, skating, which provided the stability and routine that Jon needed to gain control of his anger, sleep hygiene and take control of his enuresis.
